Nighttime can be tough. There’s something about laying in bed, waiting for sleep to come, that naturally makes your mind turn to things you may have been avoiding thinking about all day. Whether it’s something embarrassing you did five years ago or, of course, your ex-boyfriend, suddenly it’s all you can think about.

You might find yourself holding your phone in your hand, getting ready to text your ex. Should you text him good night, though? If so, what do you even say to him?

We’ve written this guide to help you vanquish those questions. We’ll tell you if it’s okay to text him, as well as provide you a list of goodnight texts for your ex-boyfriend.

Should You Text Your Ex Good Night?

There are a few situations where it is acceptable to text your ex-boyfriend…but these situations are the exception, not the rule.

In every single ex-boyfriend article we write, one of the first questions we like to consider is whether or not you should even be texting him good night. If you look at other similar posts online, you’ll probably see the vast majority of people telling you that you absolutely shouldn’t do it.

That’s where we differ. We think there are a few situations where it is acceptable to text your ex-boyfriend…but these situations are the exception, not the rule.

So when can and should you text him? Text him if you’re still friends with him, if you’re both considering getting back together, or if you’re not on horrible terms with him.

On the other hand, if he was abusive to you, if the breakup was a bad one, or you just broke up the other day, you should probably set your phone down. Texting him in these situations won’t get you anywhere.

Here’s another question you might have: should you text him if he’s happily seeing someone else?

That’s a tricky one to answer. If you’re legitimately friends with him and you’re not planning on trying to break them up, it’s fine to text him. Just be sure to keep his new partner’s feelings in mind – would you like it if he was regularly texting an ex while you were dating him?

Good Night Texts for Distant Ex-Boyfriends

We’ve created these texts specifically for exes you might not be super close to anymore. Note: this does not mean exes you are actively on bad terms with. If you’d flee the building when you run into him in public, then you probably shouldn’t be texting him to begin with.

Side Note: Check out our ultimate guide on texting guys here.

What we mean is that you can send him these texts when you’re a bit distant or openly neutral towards each other. Think someone you might greet if you were to bump into in public, but maybe not initiate a long conversation with.

  • “Good night. I hope you had a great day.”

Great For: When you want to casually slide into his DMs, but don’t want to rock the boat just yet. It’s a cool, basic text that leaves the door open for him to respond.

  • “Good night, *his name.* Is it okay if I text you tomorrow?”

Great For: When you want to set up a future (hopefully longer) conversation with him.

  • “I saw something that reminded me of you today. It’s kind of late, though – remind me to tell you about it tomorrow.”

Great For: When you want to get him curious and eager to talk to you more. Be sure you actually have something to tell him when you use this one!

  • “I can’t sleep tonight because I can’t stop thinking about you. I hope you’re doing okay.”

Great For: When you want to get back together and you’re trying to get him to think of you.

  • “We might not have ended on the best terms, but I just wanted to let you know I miss you and I’m thinking about you. Good night.”

Great For: When you want to start rebuilding a bridge between you. Acknowledging any awkwardness between you to may help clear the air so you can move forward.

  • “I can’t stop tossing and turning. Are you still awake, too?”

Great For: When you want to casually initiate a conversation with him.

  • “Would you mind getting on a call with me tomorrow? I’d love to talk to you again.”

Great For: When you want to get him on the phone with you – talking out loud is way more expressive than texting. If he agrees, though, make sure you plan things to say to him. You can try out some our topics in our guide on what to talk about with your ex-boyfriend over text.

  • “Hey, just wanted to let you know that you’ve been on my mind all day. That’s all.”

Great For: When you want to let him know you’re open to talking again, but don’t want to pressure him.

  • “If you’re not asleep already, I’d love to hear about your day.”

Great For: When you want to show him you still care about him, whether it’s platonic or romantic.

  • “Good night, *his name.* I might be in your area tomorrow, and would love to get some lunch with you if you’re willing. It’s my treat!”

Great For: When you want to see him again. Avoiding the word “date” keeps the pressure off you both, and he may be more willing to go when you offer to buy.
